When we speak of authority and responsibility, we’re referring to basic fundamentals so your business doesn’t spiral out of control. If you do not exercise authority and responsibility is not a company policy, you will face severe consequences. Let’s find out more below!
Let’s start by touching on basic points, such as the concepts of authority and responsibility. Although these are simple concepts, there are a few things that we need to understand.
Authority and Responsibility:
For a better understanding, let’s know these terms separately. Let’s start with authority.
What is authority?
Authority is closely related to government, it is a type of right you have over a group of people who report to you. That’s the simple concept of authority. But more than just saying “I’m the boss” is knowing how to exercise that authority – we’ll see that later!
What is responsibility?
As I said in How to be Responsible, great corporate value! Responsibility means being aware of and fulfilling one’s duties and, if necessary, taking the blame. And this point is closely related to authority, because being an authority means taking on a great responsibility. But at the same time, you are responsible for ensuring that each person complies with theirs, as it is necessary for the development of the company.
Why are authority and responsibility important?
The authority is in a sense the person who regulates and is responsible for ensuring that the operation of the business is adequate. If there is no authority, they would do whatever they want. As a result, they fail to fulfill their duties on many occasions. This would undoubtedly affect the development of your business. Without authority, we speak of plans not being fulfilled, resulting in the goals set not being achieved.
Here we also see the importance of responsibility, because if someone does not fulfill it, it affects the operation of the company in the sector in which they work and in others. For example, if the person responsible for paying employees is irresponsible, not only will employees be upset, but to expedite this, someone else will have to come in to perform their function instead of doing their own work.
It’s not the first time that an irresponsible person has made things complicated for the colleagues who help them.
But what does that have to do with authority? As I said, the authority is responsible for ensuring that everything is done correctly, including the above.
Authority and Responsibility Tips
The first piece of advice is for people who understand authority as the power to take advantage of others:
1- Don’t be a dictator
Remember that your role as an entrepreneur, in this case a boss, manager or other position of authority, is to do what is necessary to keep the business from spiraling out of control and achieve its goals. This means that everything you do must be for the good of the company and not to gratify personal problems, feel more powerful, humiliate, etc. As a public authority, you must consider whether the decisions you make have a negative impact on your Business impact that includes employees, products, income, etc.
2- Don’t be so passive
The other extreme is to be very passive. Here your subordinates do not respect your authority and do what they want, but not what they should. It is therefore important that you have a firm position in your decisions and do not let any of your team members negatively influence you. So you must first shape your character, have self-control and keep a cool head to make decisions without getting carried away by your choices.
3- Control your nerves
That nervous laughter, that insecurity… provokes one of two reactions from your subordinates:
- Do you feel insecure?
- They don’t respect you as an authority.
So the advice at this point is to work on your nerves. When addressing them, do so with authority, in a firm voice, and without locking your tongue.
4- Look the person in charge or your interlocutor in the eye.
Here we again combine the two concepts of authority and responsibility. As an authority, you should not be afraid of the person responsible for a bad deed. You can’t avoid this, you have to sit down with him and get his attention. If you or your managers don’t do this, they will hardly take responsibility and turn your company into a complete disaster.
When you talk to them, and even in general, don’t avoid looking at each other. This shows insecurity or fear, something that can cause you to lose authority.
More tips for improving authority and accountability:
- Speak confidently and heed warnings. This way you will see more respect and responsibility.
- Have a loud and confident tone of voice.
- Show your knowledge that you are able to be there. In a way, when someone does something wrong, they lose respect, otherwise they earn it and their authority is more respected.
- Surround yourself with good professionals. Although you’re an authority, that doesn’t mean you have to shout all the time, but for that to happen, your team needs to be accountable and professional.
- Believe in yourself, otherwise you show a lot of insecurity. You have to believe that you really are the boss.
- If you have a higher authority, be responsible and respectful. Nothing beats example to train our team.
- Showing off your good results will increase your popularity and they will therefore see you as a person of respect.
Regain authority and control your team.
The longer your team goes without an authority figure, the more difficult it becomes to control the situation. So show that you are a respectable and responsible person and that it is your duty to be too.
Without further ado, I can only say goodbye and wish you every success. A hug and see you soon.
