I think mediocrity is one of the most terrifying words there can be. And not just because it sounds, but because of what it means. In this post, I invite you to learn a little more so you realize that being mediocre doesn’t pay.
What is it to be mediocre? That is the question we are certainly asking ourselves. And it’s like we’ve heard it many times, but I’m sure you don’t know a specific meaning. Next we will answer this question, I hope everything is clear.
What is mediocrity?
Mediocrity is the inability a person can have to perform a certain activity and be successful. We can say that mediocrity is the opposite of success, excellence … that is, the opposite of everything you want to achieve.
And although many in terms of capacity, intelligence, wisdom, etc. In reality, intelligence and capability does not necessarily make you a small mediocre person. Because if you are undisciplined and don’t know how to use these talents, skills in a meaningful way, you will fail, we can say that you are mediocre (discipline vs. intelligence, what do you need as an entrepreneur?).
Another concept that catches my attention is the one that emphasizes the word mediocre. That defines it as something normal, mediocre, low, incomplete, etc. And here we can talk about the first characteristic of mediocre.
1- Leave everything halfway
If you’re one of those people who starts a project and doesn’t finish it, you can call yourself mediocre. This bad habit needs to be broken. It’s not possible to start a project excitedly today and be discouraged and give up the next month. As an entrepreneur, you have to persevere and finish whatever you start.
2- Finish everything but not with the proposed quality
There are some who end things, but unfortunately not in the way they should. They start a project in their loyalty store for a month by giving away one product for free, a month. But it turns out and happens that the quality of the product is no longer the same in order to save raw materials. That’s kind of mediocre because we only finished half of it.
3- We prefer to rest than to work
We all like to sleep and rest, but when we crave work more than success, we can speak of a symptom of mediocrity. So if you are one of them, you should activate it. You need to get your body used to work, of course you need to rest, but you must always have a reason to move and leave comfort.
4- You only do what you have to do
Not going the extra mile is being mediocre. The Bible says in Luke 17:10
In the same way, when you have fulfilled all that God commands you, you should say:
“We are useless servants because we have done nothing but do our duty.”
And it’s like doing what we have to do has no value. Well, we’re just doing our duty. So don’t settle for reaching the 50 customers per month you’ve recruited, but try to exceed that number. That speaks for excellence.
5- They only care about money
If you are only interested in money, show that you are a mediocre person. When you work for clients, part of your interest should be keeping them happy and enjoying themselves. Don’t get involved just because you want money, but because there is an area you care about. So much so that even if you were a millionaire, you would love to continue working on it. So make sure you are not only interested but something beyond that, something priceless and that is passion, calling etc.
Mediocrity brings consequences
Based on the points described above, I would like to share with you some consequences that mediocrity can bring.
1- You waste time and money
Any mediocre person who leaves things halfway is simply wasting the time it took to get to that halfway point. That certainly has a lot to do with money. That’s why you have to fight to keep your business going because if you leave without reaching your goals, you’ve just wasted time.
2- Loses credibility
Great attention is paid to the quality of what you do. Even more so when you work with people like clients. A person who loses quality over time simply shows that they cared about everything but customers.
3- Momentary Satisfaction
You may say that mediocrity will bring you calm, but it doesn’t. Well, there comes a point in life when both resting and not working lead you to a level of misery and hardship that compels you to work harder. So the satisfaction is temporary, then the suffering is worse.
4- You don’t conquer beyond what you have in front of you
What we sow, we reap. So if you are content to do what you must do, you will conquer what you must do. On the other hand, if you strive further, more than any common man, then your fruits will be greater than anyone else’s.
5- You will only reach the money and no other things of greater value
By other things I mean recognition, experience, knowledge, big companies etc. So don’t just look at the money but beyond that, like the customer’s happiness, the progress of society, among others.
You already know what to do…
… to know if mediocrity wants to enter your life. You already know what the aftermath is, and I think we can agree that it’s not pleasant at all. So be very careful, don’t leave anything half finished, finish everything with quality, work, do more than you have to and of course look beyond the money. Without further ado, all I can do is say goodbye and wish you success… A hug and see you next time.
