Google, the most popular search engine in the world (excluding China and Russia) is part of the daily life of thousands of users. It is so ingrained in our routines that it seems that we have had it all our lives (and well, actually for those who are under 20 years old it is).
However, there are many things that I am sure you have not heard about this search engine. Starting with the origin of its name and continuing with some very interesting details, you will discover all this in the next few lines!
What does Google mean?
Google has its origin in the word googol, or in Spanish gúgol, which is the number 10 raised to the hundredth power, that is, 10 raised to 100. Or in a more colloquial language, the number 1 followed by 100 zeros. Despite being a finite number, it is a really huge number.
To get an idea, it is a number so large that it is greater than the number of atoms that exist in the universe, this number is 10 raised to 78.
The term googol or gúgol has been around since 1938, when mathematician Edward Kasner asked his 9-year-old nephew to come up with a name for an immensely large number.
That was how the name chosen to name this search engine for a huge amount of information was Google.
And this is not all, Edward also created a much larger number that was the number 10 raised to a googol, that is, 1 followed by a googol of zeros. Do you know what this number is called? googolplex! Does it ring a bell? It must be because Google’s headquarters is called the Googleplex.
How it all began?
It all started when Larry Page and Sergey Brin, the founders of Google, met in 1995 at Stanford University, where they were studying computer science. They worked together on a project creating an algorithm to search for data. That was the kickoff for what we know today as Google.
In 1996 they started working on a search engine written in Java and Python, which they called BackRub. The following year, in 1997, this search engine became Google, using the domain google.com. Unlike what we know today, Google received its first investment in 1998, at which time its success story began.
The first investment was made by Andy Bechtolsheim, vice president of Cisco Systems and co-founder of Sun Microsystems. US$ 100,000 were invested in the name of Google Inc. And in this way the company was officially born.
Thus, in December 1998, Google Inc was created in Menlo Park, California, in the garage of employee Susan Wojcicki, who is currently CEO of YouTube.
In the following years the company grew. New employees were hired and moved to their current headquarters, the famous Googleplex in Mountain View, California.
From there, Google has not stopped growing and innovating, currently being considered the best search engine in history.
Google is pretty secretive about much of its numbers. However, we can make some estimates.
In March 2018, the statistics portal Statista published a study that shows everything that happens in a minute In Internet. When referring to Google, it is estimated that in 2017, 3.8 million searches were carried out every 60 seconds. This means 91.2 million searches daily. A number that, despite still being quite far from the googol, is quite impressive.
Google currently has more than 60,000 employees and has subsidiaries in more than 50 countries.
